Workbenches in their basic form consist of a worktop surface and support legs. Two saw horses with a sheet of plywood laid across them can be defined as a workbench. This design may be suitable for laying out drawings or holding a few tools, however without additional support it will not provide much more in the way of functionality or utility. Basic workbench design should include additional support structures and a strong worktop surface that will increase the load capacity of the workbench. The design may include support stringers, lower shelves, drawers, back and end stops, risers or any number of additional, specialty attachments.
The fastening system is also very important in determining the maximum load capacity of shelving. Light duty wire shelving with tubular steel uprights typically utilizes a plastic collar fastening system. Medium and heavy duty shelving systems utilize a boltless design that incorporates single or double rivets to join the front/side supports to the uprights via the punched holes. Extra heavy duty or high capacity shelving is either bolted or permanently welded together, or may utilize special high strength, boltless fastening systems designed for extra heavy duty applications.
Ramps for Lifting The first type we’ll speak of are ramps. Car ramps can be used to elevate the front end or back end of a vehicle. One ramp goes to each tire and they lift the car about 6" to 18" off the ground. They are reliable supports because the tires rest on them, making a slip or accident almost impossible.
